Paper, pencils and a tree trunk

Presenting...artwork ...

Here are the catalysts for testing out my skills on paper, not fabric:

  1. MrP, whose artistic career is about set for a brilliant take off and who has always encouraged me to enjoy and explore my creativity
  2. A number of HAED artists, who produce such stunning work ... many many kudos and thanks for flashes of inspiration and longing, to the likes of (I'm gonna be specific here) Stephanie Pui-Mun Law (once again, check out Shadowscapes, her amazing art gallery site), Caroline Young, Linda Ravenscroft, Teri Rosario, Leanne Seed and the one and only master of the marvellous Mr James C Christensen who is, I see, the thorn about these artistic roses that I've named here. Ooh, and Scott Gustafson, whose fairy tale story book-like work brings a sense of light and joy to so many memories of childhood. Ok I'm going to stop raving.

Now I don't know why I did this... it was a little break from fibre crafts, and I have to admit, it turned out kind of ... mixed. A little history: I stink at art, but I love it and always have and will.(evidence of le stink is at the bottom of this post)

However, you never know how much you can get better at this if you don't try, right? This is a tree trunk (obviously), accompanied by misshapened falling purple flowers. They're not misshapened for a reason, because there's nothing alliterative to the art (just a reflection of my mood at time of creation). It's because I can't control a pencil or pen in my hands long enough to draw a properly shaped flower and at present, learning how to add details into a piece is still a matter of 'surmounting the problem'.

What I do like about this piece, though *pause for narcissistic moue* are the mixture of background colours, and the fact that different shades add to the texture of the piece. Was quite tempted to buy a box of Aquarelle colours but knowing my legendary luck with water and brushes, it would create a royal mess .... so it's just pencils and paper for now.

That being said, I'm hoping to graduate to other things like, ummm ... dunno, fantasy stuff? Or more art decor'ish drawings that almost necessitate a hard-line outline, done in an inky dark shade. Kind of like Mucha :) Well, a girl can dream. ... so the question really remains, whether this is a hobby worth pursuing and whether there is any potential to 'get better at this'

Hm... interesting tree trunk. Are you going to try converting it into xstitch?

I still think it's lovely... I like the simple charm your art exudes.

I agree with Biblo, plus another fantasy creature (fairies please..) then you can convert it into xs. It's pretty.

I have to disagree with you about the flower. It's lovely and the way you coloured then, gives a 3D effect.

I think that's a rather clever attempt of an evil tree trunk. One that is so evil that it got zapped by lightning. Reminds of me of the grim reaper really. The flowers...hmmm...I'm still figuring a metaphor for it... :)
